I have published peer-reviewed journal articles on several noted writers who depict disabilities. In this project, I will continue my commitment to disability studies and turn attention to the legendary local writer, Chi-teng Sheng. The one-year-long project consists three tasks. First, inspired by the emerging disability studies in the US, I hope to locate and examine ableism as an ideology in Taiwanese literature. According to this ideology, only those who are (seemingly) able-bodied are worth attention, whereas those who are not are systematically discriminated and ignored. This ideology makes the common reader presume that disabilities are generally absent in Taiwanese literature. Second, I take the method of disability studies as a prism, from which the multiple connotations of Chi-teng Sheng’s works are rendered perceptible. This project is not only to study a specific literary master, but also to consider how disability studies and a famous local writer can meet. Third, I will test how disability studies can take root in Taiwan and develop new routes not found in the currently available publications in the US.
