Among an increasing literature of multidisciplinary approaches toward the study of Taiwan society in the 1960s, scholars related has reached an agreement by arguing that it was a society characterized as “an absence of subjectivity.” This feature was particularly obvious when the Koumintang’s party-state strengthened its omnipresent control over the society of Taiwan after its suppression over a group of liberal reformers led by Lei Zhen who attempted to conduct political reforms including forming a political party outside the Koumintang in 1960. In this book–writing project, without denying the major argument mentioned above, the author adopts a different approach by employing concepts of the history of mentalities, on the sources basis of unpublished diary manuscripts, trying to reexamine the feature of as well as to reconstruct the mental world of the 1960s’ Taiwan society.
