This research proposal is to examine how the 1929 Great Depression impacted on Taiwan’s political and social mentalities during the Japanese colonial period. An increasing literature suggests that the 1929 Great Depression was crucial to imperial Japan’s shift toward militarist foreign expansion in early 1930s, but what and how it impacted over colonial Taiwan’s political and social dimensions around 1929-1934 has not been clearly presented. My aim of the proposal is to explore what were new tendencies connected to the Japanese militarism of a later stage emerging in colonial Taiwan several years right after the Great Depression. Instead of adopting an economic approach, I focus on examining the dimensions of Taiwan political movements, such as Taiwan Mass Party and Taiwan Farmers League, as well as of social tendencies of mentalities of colonial Taiwan at the same period, to examine the differences and similarities of impacts caused by the Great Depression between Japan and Taiwan.
