Abstract: Since mid-2022 the EU has been confronted with an energy crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which induced record high energy prices and an inflation problem. The energy crisis exposed the EU’s vulnerability to its high energy dependency on Russian supply. This paper explored the critical questions regarding what’s the EU response to the energy crisis, and what’s the impacts for the EU energy future. In response to the crisis, the EU introduced a series of emergency market intervention measures, and also initiated a plan called REPowerEU, for diversifying energy supplies, decoupling from dependence on Russian energy, speeding up the deployment of renewable energy, cutting energy consumption, improving energy efficiency, etc. These measures will have far-reaching implications for the EU’s energy system adjustment and its climate change policy, as well as for EU-Russia and Russia- Asia energy geopolitics. The energy crisis has been a policy priority for the EU since 2022, involving political sensitivity, legal complexity and socio-economic importance for the EU. The EU’s response to the energy crisis will determine the EU’s future security, stability and prosperity.
