Entrepreneurship research has undergone a significant shift, transitioning from an emphasis on technological entrepreneurship and innovation to prioritizing the development of social entrepreneurship. This evolution stems from the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of contemporary social problems, which make it nearly impossible for a single organization or government to tackle these challenges alone. Consequently, the research perspective has shifted from the organizational level to the ecosystem level, with particular attention to the development of social innovation ecosystems and the pivotal role of leaders within them. This study aims to understand how social entrepreneurs foster ecosystem development through their leadership approaches. Through case studies of two companies engaged in regional revitalization initiatives, the research employed multiple data collection methods, including in-depth interviews with social entrepreneurs and key stakeholders, direct observations of organizational operations over one year, and analysis of internal documents and public records. The analytical framework developed encompasses four dimensions: leadership, ecosystem development dynamics, maturity of the social innovation ecosystem, and field. The findings reveal that successful social entrepreneurship requires the application of various leadership approaches, including vision, inclusiveness, symbiosis, and aesthetics. These leadership approaches facilitate the establishment of core identity, evoke discourse resonance, foster collective concepts, bridge departments or regions, integrate diverse resources, and construct institutions and infrastructures. Furthermore, the research demonstrates that outstanding social entrepreneurs not only adapt to environmental changes but also possess a deep understanding of local culture, enabling them to flexibly utilize different leadership styles to promote the development of social innovation ecosystems. While this study provides valuable theoretical insights and practical guidelines for social entrepreneurs, this study contributes significantly to understanding of social entrepreneurship and its role in promoting local development and social sustainability. |
