摘要: Introduction: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder among children. Prior research indicated TS children often recognize syllables faster than normal control (NC). We aimed to explore the tone perception and production abilities of Taiwanese children with TS. Methods: We designed three primary tasks: tone discrimination, identification, and production in Mandarin. Using the software Paradigm on a laptop under supervision, the participants were given various voice cues, with response accuracy and latency recorded concurrently. The collected data were then analyzed. Results: A total of 32 subjects participated, comprising 18 TS and 14 NC children. The results indicated the TS group had a slightly lower accuracy in tone discrimination and identification, though without statistically difference. Remarkably, 5 TS children (27.8%), compared to just one NC children (7.1%), made pronunciation errors. The accuracy of tone production displayed negative correlation with vocal tics severity on the YGTSS. Similarly, the accuracy of tone identification for the second syllable was negatively associated with impairment on the YGTSS. However, the SNAP-IV scales showed no correlation with these tasks. Conclusion: Children with TS exhibit comparable abilities in tone discrimination, identification, and production to NC children, albeit with a higher likelihood of mispronunciation. The severity of vocal tics in TS children negatively impacts their tone production accuracy.
