Wude Temple of Beigang, the founding center of thousands of temple branches, was established in the 1970s and has transmitted whole Taiwan island, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the United States. The transmission was closed related with the rapid economic growth and regional and transnational migration of Taiwan in the past four decades. Moreover, Wude Temple has been good at utilizing social media platforms, such as Facebook and Weibo (微博), to connect disperse followers and even attract overseas pilgrims. In addition, the temple also earned the “Largest Joss Paper Furnace” certificate in the Guinness World Records in 2015. On the other hand, Wude Temple and its nationwide branches have maneuvered grassroots organizations and charities in the locales and fashioned creative souvenirs and café shop, which makes the cult of God of Wealth successfully localize on the ground. The temple’s strategies for indigenization and globalization deserve further investigation. By investigating the transmission and “glocalization” of the cult of God of Wealth, we can further understand the economic value and ethics within Chinese popular religion and explore the inter-connected relationship between economic development and the regional and transnational migration in Chinese culture and society.
