The Hui Confucian literature in the Ming-Qing era is the most important historical evidence of the indigenization of Islamic Civilization in China, and the intellectual crystal of the encounter and convergence between these two classical Eastern Civilizations. To investigate how the Hui Confucian scholars reinterpret Islamic sacred texts, we might deeply understand how the process of this indigenization has undergone in the context of the classical Chinese tradition. This issue is much significant to the areas of Islamic Studies, the history of Chinese religions, and the comparative studies of world religions. My previous studies on Wang Dai-yu and Liu Zhi pinpoint the synthesization between the orthodox Sunni transcendentalism and Sufi immanentism and the communication between Islam and Confucianism in their writings. But I have not yet made a systematic textual and discourse analysis to the Hui Confucian interpretations of Qur‘an and Hadith. This project will combine the hermeneutic method and thoroughly examine the Hui Confucian literature in comparison with the classical Tafsir literature. It will elaborate how the various Hui Confucian schools represent the major debate between the “batin” and “zahir” interpretations in the Qur’anic studies and search for the foundation of communicating Islam with Confucianism by developing an indigenous Tafsir. It is crucial for tracing the origin of the Qur’anic studies in the Chinese Islamic tradition and reconstructing the process of its transformation to collect the original sources of the Hui Confucian and jing-tang schools as much as possible. Besides the published Chinese Muslim Classics, I have to do fieldwork at mosques, madrasa and the historical sites of the jing-tang in mainland China to search for those sources. Moreover, to compare with other Asian traditions, Confucianism has more intellectual achievement to make dialogue and exchange with Christianity and modern hermeneutics, from which I could learn a lot. During the three-year term of this project, I will actively participate in the seminars and conferences of Confucianism and exchange my ideas with the Taiwanese and international Confucian specialists.
