摘要: Migration and the contact among languages have characterized the inter-relationship among Vietnamese culture for thousands of years. The history of literature, language and literacy learning, in particular, point to important shared traditions. Today, the modern interactions related to new migration and economic exchange have brought the issues of language learning to our attention again. Our research project has focused its work on the bilingual and multilingual aspects of these relationships in two separate but related contexts: the learning process of immigrants to Taiwan, and similar bilingual learning situations in Vietnam involving minority language speaking children. In the first research site, the questions of the project ask about second language learning of the language of schooling, Chinese, and in the second research site about a similar question, second language learning of Vietnamese. Literacy learning, in Chinese and Vietnamese, is the next question. Then, we ask the question related to first language development: the degree to which learners of Chinese also preserve competence in Vietnamese, living in Taiwan. In turn, a similar question is posed: the degree of preservation of the first language in the context of second language learning of Vietnamese by child speakers of their local family and community language.
