The video game industry heavily relies on intricate narratives and realistic non-player characters (NPCs). Game writers typically extensively research historical and other aspects of the game's setting to improve the narrative's realism and build a sense of immersion among players. Most commercially successful games predominantly depend on scripted dialog exchanges, frequently presented in the form of a menu of options. However, the emergence of generative AI is significantly transforming the creation of game narratives and player-NPC interactions. The game employs generative artificial intelligence, specifically natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning models, to dynamically create conversation and adjust the plot based on player interactions. Players have the option to interact with characters in written or spoken form. The impact of generative AI on video games is still in its early stages. However, gaming industry experts anticipate that over the next 5 to 10 years, it will play a significant role in over 50% of the video game creation process, revolutionizing the industry. This paper investigates how generative AI affects player perceptions of NPCs by comparing AI-generated dialogues with those traditionally scripted by gamewriters. This paper concerns two key research questions: whether players rate generative AI dialogues more favorably than scripted ones and if the NPCs' appearance enhances these evaluations. The research aims to shed light on the subtle aspects of how players engage with artificial intelligence (AI) features in games and offer insights into the changing dynamics of AI technologies in the gaming industry, emphasizing the fragile balance between technological progress and human creativity.
