The German-Jewish Historian Ludwig Riess (1861-1928) was trained as a professional historian at the University of Berlin. In 1887, he began to give lectures at the Imperial University of Tokyo and thus introduced modern historical methods to Japan of the Meiji-Era. He returned Germany and 1902 and afterward taught at his alma mater in Berlin until his death. To his time, the phenomenon of the so-called “Ranke Renaissance” emerged, as some prominent historians labeled as “Neo-Rankeans” advocated the Leopold von Ranke’s claim of Objectivity. With this, they wished to distance themselves to the tendentious historical writing of the previous generation of historians on the one hand, and on the other hand, they tried to defend the scientific character of history against the assaults by the new scholarly trends. Riess is regarded as one of the Neo-Rankeans. Compared with other contemporary German historians, Riess’ working experience is very particular, but many aspects of his historiography remain to be researched. This project takes Riess as a starting point for more thorough investigations of German historiography between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.
