One important characteristic of modern construction of national discourse is to define the boundary of the imagined community, including the so-called collective homeland, the shared historical experiences in order to cultivate a national identity and belonging toward national land and history by means of various discourses/imaginations. In this study of the “nationalization of space,” I will focus on the theme of the rise and development of “national land” consciousness in modern China, adopting methods deriving from humanity studies such as collective memory, national discourse and symbol analysis, and therefore explore the following three key aspects: A. the rise and the development of “national land” discourse; B. how the national land is represented? What are the major symbols or sceneries becoming the representations of national land? C. How is the relationship between the nation and the national land defined and expressed? What are the main discourses that become paradigms, shaping the national identity and feeling toward national land? In light of the new findings from this research project, I will illuminate more clearly the features of modern Chinese nationalism.
