This research plan is aimed at exploration of “quiet-sitting” in Ming-Qing China. The discussions will in particular shed light to the arts, healing and miracle of quiet-sitting as a set of techniques. What they involve include spiritual meditation, bodily practice, and even ritual performance. In the comparative perspectives, I will firstly identify the types of quiet-sitting and reveal their respective postures, exercises, targets, and the potential challenges they might encounter. Secondly, it is often claimed that quiet-sitting can strengthen the body as well as to cure various illnesses. Some also believe that the long-term practice of quiet-sitting will possibly endow a person the power of “prediction”, or worse, to go crazy. It is thus my interest to “verify” the “effect” and “efficacy” of the quiet-sitting by investigations and interpretations of historical sources. Given that the “quiet-sitting fever” had prevailed in late nineteenth and early twentieth century China, it would be necessary to trace this phenomenon back to an earlier period. Hopefully this study with a focus on theories, practices, truth and myth of Ming-Qing quiet-sitting will help explore its popularity in a larger and multiple scope. |
