This study aims to explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic libraries, specifically analysing its current state, impact, and challenges from the perspective of librarians. The National Formosa University Library is selected as a case study and the data is collected through in-depth interviews.
Research Background The rapid development of AI technology has been gradually applied to various services in academic libraries, including intelligent search engines, recommendation systems, data analysis tools, and virtual assistants. However, the introduction of these technologies also challenges traditional library service models. This study aims to understand academic librarians' views on AI applications, explore the potential difficulties and obstacles they may face, and how to effectively promote AI usage, providing practical recommendations to enhance library service quality.
Research Objectives 1.Explore the development trends and applications of AI from the perspective of academic librarians. 2.Analyse the impact of the rise of AI on academic library services. 3.Investigate the difficulties and obstacles academic librarians face in promoting AI applications and provide practical recommendations.
Research Methods This study adopts case study and in-depth interview methods, focusing on the National Formosa University Library for in-depth analysis. Interviewees include library supervisors and senior librarians. Data collection methods include interview records, library collections, and related literature.
Research Results 1.Librarians' views on AI technology: a.Most librarians have a positive attitude towards AI technology, believing that it can effectively improve library service efficiency and reduce some of the workload for librarians. 2.Difficulties and obstacles in promoting AI applications: a.Technical and Infrastructure Issues: Resource digitisation and complete infrastructure are prerequisites for promoting AI. b.Resistance and adaptation issues among staff: Relevant training and education is needed. c.Budget constraints are a significant barrier to promoting AI applications, especially for small and medium-sized libraries. 3.Strategies to effectively promoting AI applications: a.Strengthen technical training for librarians to enhance their understanding and application of AI technology. b.Seek external resources and support, participate in national or regional library alliances, and share resources and experiences. c.Develop a phased development plan to ensure the gradual introduction and application of AI technology.
Conclusions and Recommendations The application of AI technology has broad prospects for academic library services, but it also faces challenges in technology, funding, and human resources. Librarians must adapt to changes in the new technological environment that are different from their traditional roles. This study explores the potential of AI technology in academic libraries and provides a series of practical recommendations for academic librarians. These strategies will not only help improve library service quality but also promote the professional development of librarians, providing strong support for the future development of academic libraries. |
