Taiwan citizens’ identity has undergone substantial change during the past two decades. An identity that emphasizes the island country’s cultural distinctiveness and self-determination has emerged. In particular, Taiwan citizens’ identity seems to become increasingly congruent with their perception of political parties on the island. Because the rise of a Taiwan-centered identity may affect citizens’ views of political parties, the apparent congruence of identity and party image has become an important research topic. Specifically, has the emergence of a Taiwan-centered identity shaped citizens’ views of the island country’s political parties? If so, does the congruence of identity and party image affect their partisan support and electoral behavior? Employing telephone surveys, focus group interviews and an experimental research design, the proposed study is a three-year project aiming to address the above research questions.
