Due to the popularity of Internet and the variety of English learning materials, online English learning has emerged as an updated learning trend for the web-based learners. Most of the materials are personal oriented but not collaborative oriented; therefore, the most learners would give up learning due to the lack of peer supports or interactions. With the strong growth of social communities (Facebook and etc.), people stay connected sharing daily news and information. For the learning’s sake, social networks tailor functionality to the users in learning in the community and community learning. Globally, online learning community is a research trend for its significant benefits, but the research on community management is seldom emphasized. As a result, the research will start from the community development to investigate the influences of the characteristics of learners on online learning communities, the community management mechanism on social cohesion, and the social interaction on learning achievement. Social network analysis tools will be used to investigate the interactions and the development of the communities. This 3-year research project aims to develop a game-based English learning system and conduct an experiment to analyze the learning factors among peer interactions and the acceptance for the learning system in the first year. The game-based learning system will be introduced in the second year with the social community platform to probe the impact of participants’ interactions on the learning achievement and the influence factors of personal characteristics on participant for the learning community. Finally, the mechanism of the social community management will be finalized to examine how it influences the development of the social community.
