Hikage Jokichi published his short story “The Collapse” in November 1968, which was set in Taiwan in the 1960s. In the story, Suda, a former Imperial Japanese Army soldier employed by the Taiwanese government, was engaged in the research on a certain theme in a research facility on a mountain top, but one day the facility was hit by an “unusual storm” and collapsed. An aboriginal youth named Kouru, who was one of Suda's subordinates, was convicted and sentenced to death by the Taiwanese authorities for the very reason and criminal motive of his “barbaric” nature. Yokoyama Shigeo considered that this short story was “one of the few works that have no reasonable interpretation.”
In the paper, the author adopted the concept of “The Uncanny” raised by Freud and a perspective based on the Theory of Civilization to analyze the meanings and symbolism of the “unusual storm” and other representations in the work. Through the results of the study, the emotional structure and imagery for post-war Taiwan and Japan in the mind of Hikage were investigated.
