Previous coopetition research has confirmed that competition and cooperation coexist as a common interaction between firms. Most studies on coopetition have focused on how they influence with each other, or on how coopetition can lead to performance improvements. However, there has been relatively little research on the interactive effects between competition and cooperation over time. Therefore, this study will use a problem-oriented approach to investigate how competition and cooperation change over time with the adoption of digital technology.
With the prevalence of digital transformation, many business activities have widely adopted new technologies, and the impact of digital technology extends beyond performance improvements. It also affects the relationships between firms. Therefore, this study will analyze 10 Taiwanese semiconductor companies with 226,281 related articles from 2020 Q1 to the 2022 Q2, examining dynamic changes between competition and cooperation under the diffusion of digital technology.
This study suggests that the impact of digital technology on firm coopetition depends on their ranking and status in the industry. The intensity of digital technology adoption also leads to different outcomes. We found that artificial intelligence and intelligent supply chain are the most commonly adopted digital technologies in the semiconductor industry. And companies that rank in the top 10 or bottom 50 of the industry are often driven by themselves when adopting digital technology, while firms with a middle ranking (especially ranking between 10 and 20) are more likely to be driven by brand owners.
Furthermore, when digital technology diffusion reaches a certain level, most firms experience an increase in both competition and cooperation. However, depending on the differences in technology adoption intensity, some firms can move across quadrants from Low-Low (Low competition and Low cooperation) to a state of competition dominance, cooperation dominance, or High-High (High competition and High cooperation) quadrant. Others may remain in a state of low competition and cooperation. Another finding shows that after the diffusion of technology, regardless of their ranking or status, all companies tend to return self-driven in adopting digital technology.
