This study analyzes the experiences of female nude models on social media. In the realm of social media, which is widely perceived as a public domain, women who share their nude or semi-nude photos are often labeled as “sluts”. Female nudity is blocked almost everywhere on social media, with photos banned and accounts locked. Women who take nude photos are objectified, and some might even experience slut-shaming or gender-based violence, on or outside of the Internet alike. Despite being faced with ongoing societal pressure, many women choose to continue posting nude photos of their own. Through semi-structured interviews, this study explores how female nude models respond to the patriarchal culture of slut-shaming and the male gaze, how they address gender-based violence, and how they describe the significance and values of their nude photos.
The research findings indicate that, first, female nude models have devised various strategies to diminish the risk of being criticized by others. Second, while the strong influence of the male gaze has changed how the models perceive their bodies and choose their garments and poses for nude photographs, some models have learned to challenge mainstream beauty standards and refuse to be objectified as sexual objects under the male gaze. Third, after experiencing digital gender-based violence, they have been actively counteracting the perpetrators by making public accusations or taking legal action. Lastly, nude photos have been an epitome of the female nude models’ life experiences; a declaration of self-fulfillment that taking and sharing nude photos is to satisfy the needs of none but their own, to get rewarded financially, to be complimented, to feel the pleasure, and to gain self-confidence. |
