In the process of urban development, the commercial pedestrian mall is an open public space that promotes local development and entertainment consumption, and most of them are located at the transport nodes in the city center, which are areas where human activities gather. In recent years, along with extreme climate changes, urban heat island (UHI) effects has occurred in these areas and has continued to intensify. Therefore, the thermal environment has become one of the important factors affecting the quality of its space, especially impact on leisure activity should not be underestimated. In view of this, if this study can examine the walking environment of commercial mall from the perspective of thermal comfort and explore feasible space planning strategies, it will be beneficial to create a friendly and comfortable shopping environment for pedestrians. Moreover, it’s conducive to avoid the risk of people falling into thermal discomfort, and to improve their willingness to active move in outdoor spaces, and to drive the development of the business district.

This study chooses Ximen pedestrian mall as research field, which is dominated by street shopping. By using fixed measurements in the field observes thermal comfort, further clarifying the correlation between thermal environment factors and thermal comfort through regression analysis. Additionally, supplemented by questionnaires to investigate the subjective option of thermal perception, spatial improvement preferences and behavioral intentions after improvement. Through the above methods, this study will gradually explore the thermal environment situation of commercial pedestrian malls, and then analyze the causes of high temperature phenomenon. Finally, based on the objective and subjective survey results, it will develop a walking environment improvement strategy to provide a reference for future space improvement planning.

The results suggest that under the climatic conditions of the typical hot season in Taiwan, the walking environment before 4 pm in the commercial pedestrian mall has poor thermal comfort, especially at noon. In addition, thermal discomfort in commercial pedestrian malls is most closely related to the shading of the block space, as well as the shading and evapotranspiration cooling effects formed by small-scale greenery. Therefore, hotspots are mostly located in open spaces with less shade. Then, this study also conducted a questionnaire survey on these hotspots, and found that due to the different environmental tonality and spatial patterns in the walking area, the respondents had some differences in improvement strategies, and more than 80% of the respondents agreed that improving the thermal environment would have a positive impact on spatial behavior intention. Based on the current situation, user preference and practical feasibility, this study finally proposed the appropriate improvement strategies for different spatial types, hoping to provide reference and application for planning departments.
