Abstract: | This study investigates the determinants of loan defaults of the village banks in Laos. I use a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview to collect data. This research is based on 293 microcredit loans granted by the village banks under the supervision of the microfinance institution (Saving and Credit Union Champa Phatthana). By applying statistical methods, I find that marital status (widowed), family members who earn the living, expenses on festivals less than 1million LAK, no agriculture land holding, loan size (ln), and loan diversion rate less than 35% have positive relations with loan default. Conversely, commute time to the financial institution office, loan diversion rate more than 50%, and construction loan factors have negative relations. |
