In 2012, the number of people accessing the Internet via mobile phone surpassed computer in China for the first time, representing the beginning of China`s Internet transition to mobile. In the same year, WeChat launched Moments (called "pengyouquan" in Chinese), a realtime writing platform. "Wait a minute, I want to share a post on moments." This phrase has marked the transfer of writing activities from indoor to everyday situations. "Anytime, anywhere", beyond the limitations of time and space, real-time writing has become another ideal for technology companies to shape with the possibility of electronic media. The younger generation born after 1990 in eastern China gradually grew accustomed to recording daily life in the form of online digital writing and actively practiced realtime writing, who was selected as the research object of this study. The research follows the tradition of cultural studies, which pays attention to the relationship between users and society, and understands media as practice, which emphasizes the varieties of media practice in daily life. At the same time, this study also draws on the concept of "polymedia", hoping to break through the transitional focus of the platform in the field of social media research. This study attempts to explore the significance of realtime writing practices on WeChat from the long-term and complex practices of young adults. This study combines the methods of in-depth interviews and daily records of users to understand the digital writing experience and the daily practices of young adults. It was found that the wrestling between users and society not only greatly affected the overall development trend of WeChat and other platforms, but also penetrated into the daily micro practices of individuals. Realtime writing practices sometimes reorganized, activated and microscopically subverted daily life, but sometimes consolidated the original spatiotemporal order and became a deliberate operation, reflecting the complex relationship between this writing form and daily life. This study also finds that the practice of young adults are based on its dissatisfaction with the existing collectivism and the order of daily life. On the contrary, they are actively constructing new writing spaces online, imagining new ways of interaction to achieve a state of taking into account both public and private. |
