In the new media era where technology is booming, the objects projected by human consciousness gradually move from reality to virtuality. In the near future, when the emerging digital technologies such as Extended Reality, 5G Network, and Brain-Computer Interface being mature, humans will use virtual body as a carrier of the extension of consciousness, combined with it to become a “Cyborg”.

Will virtuality replace reality someday? And what kind of mental state will future human be in this situation? Through the related research and concept combing, this research designs and creates the artwork “Recursive Virtuality” to create the infinite recursively “virtual reality in virtual reality”, which enables the viewer to experience the incompetent state of mind and consciousness blending into reality and virtuality of future human. This artwork is made to awaken the modern people who are immersed in the hypnosis of digital technology, and let the society pay more attention to the doubts that may be brought about by the development of digital technology in the near future.

The research is divided into five chapters: The first chapter introduces the background, motivation, purpose, methods and limitations of the creative research. The second chapter discusses the impact of digital technology development on reality and virtuality through the study of contemporary and developing digital technology, surmise the mental state of future human from the perspective of neuroscience and post-humanism, and analyzed the creation of related topics. After combing through literature, the third chapter presents the creative concept, media and structure of the interactive virtual reality artwork “Recursive Virtuality”, and introduces the exhibition process, feedbacks from the audience and the experiences obtained by conducting the exhibition in the fourth chapter. Finally, the fifth chapter presents the conclusion and future prospects of this research.
