Transculturation is the process by which a culture is transformed by another for self-aggrandizement. As demonstrated by the Disney animated feature Mulan, transculturation is an evolving process involving both organizational routines and experimentation through which the foreign culture is decontextualized, essentialized, recontextualized, domesticated, and sometimes universalized. Transculturation also involves the transfiguration of cultural forms, which affects the extent to which the original culture is changed. It always results in cultural hybrids, the relative weights of whose component cultures are often determined by the tensions between foreign and domestic cultures. The hybrid will be globalized if it is successfully distributed through a word-wide network. The extent of globalization is closely linked to the hybrid’s quality as well as the producer’s reputation, resources, marketing knowhow, and access to the distributional infrastructure. Globalizing the hybrid implies boundary-crossing between the global and the local and between the foreign and the indigenous. Through transculturation and globalization, what is once local is rendered global and what is foreign is made indigenous.
