Family businesses play an important role in economy. However, copreneurs, as a subset of family firms, are considered “outliers” in the field of entrepreneurship by scholars, causing lack of related research on it. Moreover, previous researchers tended to focus only on single issue of copreneurship each time, and little research has been carried out on copreneurial firms and innovation. As a result, this study aims at exploring the content and relationships among business, family, and individual entity in terms of copreneurship, and bridging the gap between copreneurial firms and innovation.

The study applies case study method. Three companies are selected as research case studies, and are interviewed and analyzed. The study applies a systems view by investigating the resources and capabilities at firm level, group level, and individual level of copreneurship in the resource-based and social capital perspectives. The findings suggest that copreneurial firms’ “familiness” constitutes of the synergy generates from the resources and capabilities in the business, family, and individual entity, and there are reciprocal relationships among three entities. In addition, the source of innovation usually originates in copreneurs themselves, and the low formalization and complexity of copreneurial businesses can promote effective communication within the organization.
