|Depending on countries, the concept of life and death is different, and depending on ethnic groups and religions, the concept of the world of death is also different. Perhaps influenced by the worldly-mindedness of Confucianism, the Chinese have avoided talking about death since ancient times, and the description of the world of death is rare in Chinese literary works. By contrast, the Japanese have been highly interested in death since ancient times, and the description of the world of death is usual in the literary and artistic works. How is the Japanese concept of the world of death formed? What cultural elements are included? In this paper, literary and artistic works from the ancient to the modern as example, the description of the world of death and the reason why the Japanese concept of the world of death is formed are discussed. Furthermore, the religious elements in the Japanese concept of the world of death are discussed and the relations among Shinto, Buddhism and the concept of the world of death are explained. Finally, from the point of view of Shinto and Buddhism, the Japanese knowledge of the world of death and the difference between that knowledge and the thoughts of Shinto and Buddhism are discussed. This paper aims to construct the idea of the Japanese world of death and to help understand the Japanese culture of death.
