Abstract: We develop an integrated unit-based learning curve model and measurement framework that assesses simultaneously both the acquisition of knowledge and its depreciation. We empirically demonstrate its application using the Liberty Ship data, a well-known benchmark data set. The results show that (i) both acquisition and depreciation of knowledge occur, (ii) product variety generates inefficiencies such as an increase in production cycle time; interestingly, and counter to prior research, not accounting for such inefficiencies did not significantly affect the estimates for either knowledge acquisition or depreciation rates, (iii) the parameter estimates are relatively robust to the three learning model functions considered in the knowledge depreciation literature…the log-linear, replacement, and accumulation learning models, and (iv) estimates of knowledge depreciation are relatively robust to changes in the depreciation of capital stock. Key implications of our results are: (i) depreciation estimates may be quite sensitive to the measurement framework, viz selected sequence of production units, and (ii) both knowledge acquisition and knowledge depreciation must be considered in making organizational decisions, such as capacity planning and resource allocation.
