The periodicals CARDEX is the fundamental tool for the periodicals management but it is unable to meet readers` requirements owing to the unprompt renewal of the card catalogs and the not update collection records. Therefore, to facilitate the periodicals management and readers` utilization the Chungcheng Library of the National Chengchi University has decided that prior to the overall implementation of the library automation a set of periodicals catalogs will first be made available through the personal computers for the librarians and readers and a database will be set up with dBASE III+ for the basic periodicals collections. The purpose of the above-mentioned decision is not to develop a periodicals system but rather to set up a database with the dBASE for printing collections catalogs so that an inventory of periodicals collections can be made and the missing and back issues will be re-ordered for the completeness of the collections, thereby effectively fulfilling the funtions of helping readers to obtain their required data and laying the foundation for the periodicals control through the conversion of the related bibliographic data into the INNOPAC system. To process periodicals catalogs with dBASE database is actually confronted with pre-existent limitations but is evidently a rapid and easy-to-learn approach up to the present. There are many libraries in Taiwan that have already developed their library automation system with the dBASE. The paper aims at offering the experience in this aspect on the part of the National Chengchi University Libraries with an appendix of the western-languages periodicals catalogs format as a primary conclusion of the said operation and a sample for mutual sharing of the experience.
