Abstract:	西方文明自文藝復興(Renaissance)開始便邁向一個與中世紀(Medieval)截然不同的新紀元，而啟蒙運動(Enlightenment)之後，則正式步入了所謂的現代。於此之際，屬於新時代的思維亦發展完備，論者稱為現代主義(modernism)。相較於中世紀，現代人的心靈屬於個人而不是上帝。因此，現代主義最為深層的理念是對於人類理智(reason)的信任，而其衍生的文化形貌有二，即：人文主義(humanism)以及理性主義(rationalism)。人文主義所揭示的信念是現代的知識、制度乃以實現人類的存有(being)為最終日的；理性主義的意涵則是透過科學知識的成就，將人類從神話的迷思之中予以解放，試圖成為自我以及所置身之世界的主宰。後現代主義便是揭櫫反啟蒙理性精神之大纛對現代主義展開嚴厲而深刻地批判。
