The aim of this project is to investigate Taiwanese science students’ emotional experiences in relation to their career development. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies will be used to understand science students’ in-depth contextualized emotions. The first qualitative study (Study 1) will collect data from 15 science student teachers’ audio diaries on their most impressive experiences during their first full-time teaching practicum for 4 weeks. The second qualitative study (Study 2) will interview 40 high-school science students regarding their life experiences related to their choice of science careers and their knowledge beliefs (and strategy use), confidence, and interest in science subjects (math, physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science). The first quantitative study (Study 3) will collect data from 250 students. The major measures used include a questionnaire on formative emotional events in science learning, a scale on emotional intelligence, demographic characteristics, and future career/specialty choice. The second quantitative study (Study 4) will validate the theories created by the interview (qualitative) research conducted in Studies 1-2 using data from educational databases. Quantitative data are analyzed by basic statistics, structural equation modeling, and multilevel analysis. The project is likely to contribute to the knowledge of emotional competence and career development in science learning. Future intervention is likely to be developed based on the findings.
