This one-year research project is a pilot study, which serves as a preliminary investigation for a multi-year research plan of the same research interest in documentary cultures between China and Taiwan. There are two main goals to be achieved in his project: 1. to do a sufficient collection and reading of the independent documentary films with political discourses produced in China since 2004, and investigate their ways of screening and circulation; 2. to compare with the channels of screening and distribution of the ‘non-mainstream’ documentary films, produced in Taiwan since the same year that politicize their issues. This project aims at a provisional study that offers a comparative view on specific social/cultural differences in each society through their respective documentary productions, as well as how these works reflect and respond to the respective society documented. This project will function as a fundamental study for more advanced and thorough future analyses of aesthetics, ethics and politics of documentary films in both Chinese societies.
