Zhu Xi’s work, The Exegesis of the Collections of Texts from the Four Books (Sishu zhangju jizhu), made the Four Books become canons, while the establishment of the official examination system in Ming Dynasty was the main cause of officializing the Four Books. Above all, Yongle Emperor (Chengzu of Ming Dynasty) decreed to compile Encyclopaedia of the Four Books. With the imperial authority, scholars changed their way of pursuing studies when the Four Books transcended the Five Classics and became the core of the Confucian Philosophy. Basing on the substitution of canons, the derived system of classic from Zhu Xi, his disciples, to Yuan scholars construct Zhu’s predominant position. Encyclopaedia of the Four Books mostly continued and succeeded Ni Shi-Yi’s Collected Annotation of the Four Books. However, through comparing the contents as well as the additions and deletions in these two works, I reconstruct the context and find out the object of the system of construction. On one hand, Encyclopaedia of the Four Books passed on the achievement of Yuan scholars’ annotation in Xinan system, and on the other hand, it responded Xinan scholars’ argument which contended against Raolu system in order to get the predominant position of interpreting Zhu’s study. In the connection between Song and Yuan, threads of schools have divided increasingly, and then threads of schools, sects, and affections of clan were all transformed into a belief of defending Zhu’s study, which was the central object of Encyclopaedia of the Four Books. Here I must go one step further to make the academic pedigree of Yuan scholars’ interpretation of the Four Books and the complex process of inheritance clean because many Yuan scholars’ works were lost and the clue was indistinct. In order to achieve this goal, I will reorganize the documents and compare the texts in this paper.
