    Abstract: 吳汝綸認為自己已難以下筆為文,並指出說經不如為文,這是因為為文難而說經易。其經學著作,是以文字訓詁為解經門徑。賀濤則指出吳汝綸的經學是經義寄於文,文從而後辭獲所安。吳闓生等也指出吳汝綸是以文衡鑒歷代作者。而與吳汝綸自述不甚相合。本文即以文法──文章的技法,分析為文與說經的問題,討論兩者的關係與異同。吳汝綸或從《史記》及漢代作家文例,分析「曰若稽古」為發語詞。或從君臣對話的情境,論證「四岳」為一人非四人。或從文章的完整性,說明流放「四凶」的時間非一時。或分析《尚書》安章定句之法,有前後相承,分應各句的技巧。或指出篇章構造的特色,看似發端之詞,卻是補充之詞;看似承接之詞,卻是發端之詞。又有以讀者心態決定文字意義者。吳汝綸所指「說經」就是以訓詁方式解釋經典,尤其是乾嘉以降所發展的方法;「為文」則在於約六經之旨而成文,推崇歐陽修、韓愈,並以司馬遷為典範,就在諸家通貫六經,組織成文,從文章的內涵到形式,以經典為歸依。
