Executive succession is a critical change event for any organization, which may trigger dramatic changes of an organization`s strategy, design, climate, performance and environment. It is the pervasiveness of the impact that the topic captures intense attention of both practicians and researchers. This study reviews executive succession literature and proposes suggestions for future researches. We begin by classifying the succession field into six key areas: successor leadership, successor origin, succession rate, role of the board of directors, succession consequences, and succession process and planning. After exploring the status of the literature, we create a conceptual framework designating where researchers have been and where we should be going in the future.
