The Republic Period is the intersection point where old and new cultures meet; a great number of scholars with exceptional caliber emerged during this time. In the field of Confucian Classics, these scholars have produced a tremendous body of valuable treatises. However, due to multiple turbulences, the propagation and preservation of these works and materials pose a great challenge and thus impose a severe restriction on the publishing and circulation of many significant treatises. Due to the incompleteness of the treatise materials, later scholars are unable to formulate a lucid and wholesome understanding of the period’s academic situation. In view of the circumstances, this project (“A Consolidation and Research on Confucian Classics Treatises that have Limited Circulation”) aims to examine, collect, consolidate, and do research on the Classics that are not widely circulated in the Republic Period. The method employed to carry out this project is to anthologize the works according to their authors. Three distinguished philologists who are representative of the period are selected and their important works, which are not widely circulated, are collected. Consequently, their treatises would be proofread and arranged carefully and a profound examination of its academic content would be made, in hope of re-circulating the works that these scholars have painstakingly accomplished, and thus influencing the current academic field. The first year of the project aims to compile and research on two treatises of Luo Zhuo Han, namely A Discourse on Poetry and Music and Evidence on Shiji Yearly Chronicle of the Feudal Lords. Albeit the latter has been published in Chungqing during the wars, it has little authority due to the limited circulation of the work. The former enjoys better book sales but its influence is also insignificant. The above mentioned works of Luo have received academic honor from the Ministry of Education in the 30th and 31st year of the Republic Period respectively, which is evident that these works are highly esteemed in their time. Therefore, the sporadic circulation of his works is due to reasons that are unrelated to the academia. The second year’s goal is to arrange and study Chen Yan Jie’s Explanatory Notes on the Preface of the Book of Songs and A Revision on Cheng’s Commentary of The Book of Changes. Likewise, though the former has been published before, it has limited leverage. While the latter has received an academic award from the 34th Academic Committee, the book was never published. Its appearance is rare in the academic field, not to mention any significant influence the work has ever exerted. Therefore, only through republication and recirculation of Chen’s book, and an in-depth disquisition on it, would the world be able to understand his works concretely and provide academic criticism objectively. This year, the project focuses on the next scholar whom this project plans to anthologize and research on—Su Wei Yue’s work, Volumes on the Book of Song. Su’s collection of volumes won the academic award in the 34th year of the Republic period and like Chen’s fate, Su never had an opportunity to publish his book; his work is only circulated and passed down in the form of manuscript. Decades later, Su’s book is still relatively unknown which is the ultimate misfortune of a scholar. In terms of collecting and consolidation of the academic materials, besides proofreading and compiling the above mentioned works, the project aims to expansively collect the authors’ biographical materials, related information on their acquaintances with other scholars or academic circles, as well as other information that involves the period’s education, culture, or academic situations such as that of universities, academic institutions, government sectors, publishing houses, and so forth, as the basis of our proofreading and compilation. For academic research, this project will be divided into four aspects: (1) biographical experience and discourse (2) academic background (3) the main content of the treatises (4) relations to the development of the scholarship on Classics in the Republic Period. From these four aspects, the project shall probe into the academic success of these three scholars, 表 C011 共 頁 第 頁 with a heavy inclination towards their involvement in the new academic trend in the Republic Period. Through the academic examination of these three scholars, this project aims to achieve a more profound understanding of Confucian Classics scholarship and its scholars, in this critical transition of old and new cultures.
