    Abstract: 過去十年來,隨著台灣經濟及產業結構轉變,台灣建築材料業之地位逐漸被新興的高科技產業所取代。在過去該產業被譽為「火車頭產業」,如今地位已大不如前,市場資金也由房地產建築業轉向高科技產業。各建築材料公司為求企業之永續經營,紛紛尋找出路,如轉投資、進出口貿易、東南亞未開發之國家發展或多角化經營等。
    建築材料業是一個攸關社會大眾住、行、育、樂等生活機能的行業,其重要性大者影響國家社會秩序,小者改變個人生活型態。只要民眾追求高品質的生活一天不中輟,社會邁向現代化的動力一天不停頓,建築材料業始終扮演舉足輕重的角色。
    建築材料業不像一般的產業,需要投入大筆的資金,購置土地、廠房、設備才可以生財。反而,憑藉著小筆資金,就可以以小博大,一旦成功,很快就翻身致富;也不像高科技行業,需要擁有很多的專業知識和技術才能生存,套句學術上的術語,也就是產業的進入障礙低,很容易跨行進入,因為進入容易,所以很容易供過於求。產業內,縱有好光景,為期也不會太長。因此,在國內的這個行業中除了少數伺機而入見好就收,或賺到錢即能轉投資其他行業的聰明人士之外,能夠在這個產業中正派經營並且長期獲利的,倒也為數甚少。在景氣不好的時候,營造材料業不論退票比率、退票張數、退票金額上都高居各業之冠。

    建築材料所牽涉的產品規格種類甚多,當材料商在囤貨時,便會經常發現滯銷或是流動性快速的貨品類別與尺寸,而如何從顧客的價值需求,去瞭解到品類管理的重要性與囤貨資金的有效運用。
