(English as a foreign language—EFL)的大學課程之相關議題。
The current paper addresses the issues of incorporating character education into the college English coursework in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context. Character education stems from a mission for all schools and teachers to foster in their students personal and civic virtues. The ultimate goal of character education is to help learners become informed, responsible, and caring citizens. Continuous character growth is all the more necessary for young adults in the university. It is argued that introducing moral education into the EFL curricula would help language learners develop not only their linguistic skills, but also their social awareness, emotional well-being, critical thinking, and a tolerant world view, all of which are congruent with the philosophy of language teaching to promote intercultural appreciation and empathy. This paper will examine the existing literature of character education in mostly primary education contexts and argue for the pressing need of such curriculum in the university EFL settings. Pedagogical guidelines and suggestions concerning the implementation of the university EFL coursework are also included.
