This paper is aimed at exploring Sino-Southeast Asian relations based upon the politics of Guanxi. It emphasizes the strategic arrangements and local networking of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in Southeast Asian countries. Moreover, it also provides a full account and review of typological analysis on Sino-Southeast Asian studies and further elaborates the politics of guanxi in accordance with the rise of Confucius Institutes in Southeast Asia based upon fieldwork in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, and Myanmar. It argues that Confucius Institutes work as nodes of a guanxi network and their strategic proliferation will facilitate and enhance the interaction between state-to-state, state-to-society, institute-to-society, and institute-to-institute links.
