Categorization and working memory are two pillars of cognition. The psychologists in these two fields have provided great contributions to the understanding of each of these two components of cognition. However, there are only two studies (DeCaro, et al., 2006; Yang, et al., 2006) specifically designed for investigating any relationship between categorization and working memory. This study is aimed to pursue the findings of these two studies to examine the relationship between working memory capacity and categorization. The study first reviews the two studies which recently reported that working memory may be relevant to the individual differences in categorization. However, both studies have raised questions on the technical and theoretical levels. Thus, four experiments are proposed in the present study in order to improve the experiments of these two studies by including the data of all subjects instead of a few extreme groups in data analysis, by using continuous measures for indicating subjects’ learning performance, by adopting multiple working memory spans as the measures of working memory capacity, and by conducting different tasks (e.g., feature-prediction task, concurrent task).to investigate on which level working memory plays a role in categorization. The findings in this study will provide more information to our understanding of the interaction between the two major components of cognition.
