Ever since adopting the open-door policy of reform, Mainland China’s developments and changes have been closely connected with those of the outside world. Since 1990s, “globalization: has become a hot topic, as economic and technological developments bring the whole world more closely together. The trend of globalization has tremendously affected Mainland China’s relations with the world, and the discussion on globalization has also had a great impact on China’s perception of the world and of itself. This article introduces and compares the perspectives that Mainland Chinese scholars have on globalization, seeking to find out the implications hidden in the debate among these different views. The discussion of this article will be based on two sets of theoretical frameworks. The first proposed by David Held and his colleagues, contains three general perspectives on globalization, that is, the “hyperglobalist perspective,” the “sceptical perspective,” and the “transformationalist perspective.” The second is the three theoretical perspectives in international political economy: realism, liberalism, and Marxism. Based on these two sets of theoretical frameworks, this article will discuss the different perspectives two sets of theoretical frameworks, this article will discuss the different perspectives on Mainland Chinese scholars on such relevant issues as “economic globalization,” “globalization and culture,” “globalization and state sovereignty,” “globalization and domestic political reform,” and “globalization and foreign relations.” This article also includes observations made by some western scholars on Chinese perspectives of globalization. This article finds that although there are some commonalties among Mainland Chinese scholars, there also exists an obvious plurality of perspectives on various issues regarding globalization. Based on this observation, the article applies this plurality of views on globalization to the discussion of “cross-strait relations,“ and proposes some alternative thinking in order to solve problems in cross-strait relations that parallel the logic of globalization.
