In the 1980s, after the widespread democratization of many countries around the globe called “the Third Wave,” many scholars began to focus on the interaction between economic liberalization and political democratization. This has been particularly so given that Latin American countries (such as Mexico), have achieved reforms that have become more and more eye-catching. This paper analyzes the long history of Mexico, particularly its one-party system. In addition to explaining the causes of mexico’s transition, this paper also contributes to the field of area studies and democratization theory.
