    Abstract: 唐代是翻譯佛經和西行求法運動的高峰時期,為了更好地理解深奧佛法的真諦以及學習域外知識,與梵語等外語(或西域民族語言)相關的啟蒙著作及工具書,包括佛教詞典、梵漢字書、佛經音義著作等等更是急需的熱門。討論唐代社會的胡語學習及使用風氣,從時代背景來分析佛教雙語字書以及音義著作形成的原因,有助于更深入地了解這些文獻的價值。
    Sui and Tang Dynasties were the most important period of translation of Buddhist canons and movement of study Buddhism to India and Central Asia. In order to understand complicated Buddhism and study foreign knowledge, people had first to learn Indian Sanskrit or other ethnic languages in western regions. As a result, Buddhist and non-Buddhist scholars began to write or edit various kinds of rudimental books and imperative reference books, for example, Buddhist dictionaries, Sanskrit-Chinese wordbooks, interpretation of pronunciations and meanings in Buddhist canon. This paper discusses the vogue of study and use of foreign languages in Tang Dynasty. The author makes an effort to analyze the various causes in its formation why Sanskrit-Chinese wordbooks and Buddhist dictionaries were fashionable in that age.
