This paper investigates the duplication, overlap and uniqueness of two commercialized databases (Science Citation Index Expanded and Scopus) and three open access systems [Google Scholar (GS), Microsoft Academic Search (MAS), and CiteSeerX]. The works by 30 A. M. Turing award winners from 1990 to 2012 were selected as the samples of this study. The results reveal that (1) the retrieval functions of SCIE and Scopus are multiple;(2) the information about sources of SCIE and Scopus is more complete and unique;(3) the sources of SCIE and Scopus are better for academic works;(4) GS includes the highest numbers of records;(5) the duplication of SCIE and Scopus is the highest and (6) GS、MAS and CiteSeerX can work as the sources collecting tools. Major sources of overlap for each comparison pair are also identified. Suggestions on the use commercial citation databases and open access citation systems and to the library are also given. |
