The study of the European Union is gaining ground as a prominent category in the discipline of political science in Taiwan. Whereas this phenomenon is doubtlessly a result of the rapid and far-reaching developments within the EU itself, the popularity of the study of the EU can by no means be seen as a proof for quality research in this area. In fact, far from being in an ideal state, the study of the EU continues to face tremendous challenges in Taiwan, ranging from the geographic distance, under-explored resources, to the insufficient dialogues with the Europeanists outside Taiwan. This research intends to take a close look at the content, nature, quantity, path, as well as future trajectory of EU studies in Taiwan. A comparison will then be made among Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, and South Korea. In order to lay out the contour of this sub-field in each country, This research will first build a data base that contains journal articles, degree theses, scholar background, publication in journals overseas, research centers, departments, programs, professional associations, and supporting funding sources in the field. In-depth interviews with scholars in all four countries will be conducted to ensure the reliability of the data. A content analysis of these data will then lead to statistic figures that can help us map out the path of the developments in EU studies in the past two and a half decades in the four countries and help us predict the future trajectory of EU studies. Most importantly, this research will help the Taiwanese scholars working on the EU to sort out the strengths as well as weaknesses in EU studies here and to identify ways to improve EU research.
