The system of Mikado is not only the longest in the world now but also the foundation stone to support Japanese culture which has existed for more than 1300 years. Then, we must clarify the system of Mikado if we want to understand Japanese culture; acquire who Mikado is if clarify the system of Mikado; thoroughly overhaul the Mikado image in the ancient Mikado if acquire who Mikado is. What the so-called Mikado system is a ruling system by Mikado. But is Mikado a religious character? Or political? Or both? These questions are always the focal points in many researches from kinds of areas, but fail to have final conclusions so far. This project is aimed at picturing an archetype of Mikado in ancient Mikado system by the method of character analysis. Character analysis is always a useful method to help us to well understand plot or theme in a story. This project is based on Kojiki, Nihonsyoki and Manyousyu, treats Mikado as one of character types and analyses Mikado’s image appearing in stories by the index of Mikado’s words, behavior, response, appearance and manner, etc. Meanwhile, we will compare and analyze images of these Mikado, and then try to find out the original behind all images – the archetype of Mikado in the ancient Mikado system, and furthermore think about the influence of the archetype on ancient literature. There are lots of researches about the ancient Mikado system, but no researcher has ever done a systematic job from the viewpoint of character analysis until now, and proceeded to find out an archetype of Mikado. Therefore, we believe this project would open a new window for ancient Japanese literature and Mikado research.
