Fast detection of threatening stimuli and demanding more attentional resources to them were assumed to be helpful for the survival of the individuals. Relevant to this view, the purpose of this project is to explore the effect of threatening stimuli on attention using exogenous cuing task. With this paradigm, the engagement and disengagement components of attention can be decomposed. In addition, the interaction between top-down attentional control and the reflexive orienting induced by exogenous cue can be investigated. In this project, participants will be recruited from the normal population. Three kinds of schematic face (angry, happy and neutral face) are included as the cues in the cuing task. Among them, the angry face is a threatening stimulus. The cuing effect of angry face and happy face will be compared with neutral face condition. Stimulus-onset-asynchrony (SOA) between the cue and target is manipulated to observe the time course of the effects. The percentage of valid trials is also manipulated to observe the modulation effects of top-down control, in short SOA and long SOA separately. Both reaction times and event-related potentials are measured using a go/no-go paradigm. The expected outcome of this project will help to understand the effect of angry face on attention more thoroughly and more deeply. Contributions to the emotion studies and understanding of the attention processes can be anticipated.
