Prof. Peter Fulde has received the 2009 ’Tsungming Tu Award’. This provides a golden opportunity for international cooperation. Prof. Fulde created the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MIPPKS) at Dresden, Germany. He had been the Director and Scientific Member of this institute from year 1993 to 2007. He is currently the head of the ’electronic correlations group’ of MIPPKS. He is also the president of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), Pohang (Korea) since 2007. Considering the expertise of Prof. Fulde and his collaborators, we propose to embark on the research in the following three topics: The first one is the multi-orbital Kondo effect, which has been proposed to explain the large spin Hall effect (SHE) in the Au/FePt system. The second one is the Kondo lattice model with the magnetic moments form a geometrically frustrated lattice. Finally, we propose to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Kondo systems. These proposed topics are highly interesting but nonetheless very challenging. To tackle these problems, several different theoretical methods would be needed. Therefore, we propose to coordinate the complementary expertise and theoretical skills of related condensed matter theorists in both Graduate Institute of Applied Physics, National Chengchi University (NCCU) and Department of Physics, National Taiwan University (NTU), and also to collaborate with colleagues of Prof. Fulde in Germany and Korea. Therefore, we would like to apply mainly for travel fund for domestic scholars to Germany and Korea, and Prof. Fulde and his collaborators coming from Germany and Korea to Taiwan.
