    Abstract: 本計畫有三大研究目的,第一個研究目的在瞭解台灣科學研究新聞報導的正確性;首先回顧過去相關文獻,找出科學新聞報導錯誤的三大類型{包括:全然的錯誤(outright error)、非本質性的錯誤(non-substantive alterations)和資訊的遺漏(omission of relevant information)},然後以此分析台灣本地科學家的研究透過新聞媒體被報導時,其錯誤出現的比例和類型為何。此外,究竟一般民眾是否認為科學新聞報導錯誤度高,進而影響其信任新聞中的科學報導,而科學家是否認為科學新聞報導的錯誤度高,進而影響其對於科學記者的信任或與記者互動的意願,也是值得探討的主題,這也是本計畫的第二個研究目的。本計畫的第三個研究目的是探討暴露於錯誤的科學新聞可能產生的影響為何。主要想探討兩個常見且值得關注的狀況,第一個值得關注的狀況為:科學研究超越一般閱聽眾的生活經驗範圍,其內容經常也深奧難解,閱聽眾在不完全理解的情況下,可能倚賴媒體可信度來作判斷。亦即閱聽眾可能因為一個媒體的可信度高,進而相信一則錯誤新聞的內容;在此關注焦點下,本計畫想探究兩大問題,第一、高可信度媒體上出現的錯誤科學新聞,是否比較容易讓閱聽眾信以為真;第二、是否低可信度媒體上出現的錯誤科學新聞可能會產生睡眠效果;亦即,當時間推移後,閱聽眾是否會因為淡忘消息來源,即使低可信度的媒體錯誤報導也可能造成閱聽眾相關科學信念的改變。第二個值得關注的狀況是,一則科學研究可能被不同媒體重複報導,當各家媒體的新聞皆出現不正確的內容(例如:過度外推與使用引人誤導的主標),是否在重複暴露後,閱聽眾更容易信以為真。同時,新聞媒體中總是強調科學的萬能(powerful)與好處,是否在「科學萬能」被預示(prime)而可得性(accessibility)較高的情況下,閱聽眾更有可能誤信過度外推或誇張標題的科學研究報導,而形成錯誤的判斷。
    The project has three objectives. The first objective is to explore the accuracy in science news reporting. A literature review suggests that there are three major types of news inaccuracy: outright errors, non-substantive alterations and omissions of relevent informaiton. Within this typology, this project will analyze media coverage of scientific research by Taiwanese scholars and interview these scholoars for their assessment of accuracy of news coverage of their research. The second objective is to explore perceived accuracy of science coverage among the general public and researchers. The third objective is to examine the influence of inaccurate science coverage and will be achieved with two experiments. The first experiment will test the influence of media/vehicle credibility on assesments of reported issues and the possible sleeper effects and the second experimetn will examine repetition effects and synergy effects of inaccurate news coverage on different media.
