This project proposes to investigate the relationship between media use and daily rhythms in everyday life in Taiwan in the 1930s and 2010s. My research questions are as follows: How are media technologies used in everyday life? How may the ways of use relate to daily rhythms and other activities in everyday life? How are daily rhythms structured, and how may the structures relate to the actors’ social roles? How may the features of media technologies affect the ways of use and time rhythms? What are the social tempos in Taiwan in the 1930s and 2010s? How do people experience and live with time pressure? In terms of research design, I shall conduct an archival research to portray ways of media use and everyday rhythms in the 1930s. Among various media technologies, radio broadcasting will be the focus of the discussions in the period of 1930s. Also, multiple methods including self-diaries, semi-structured questionnaires, and participating observations will be employed to investigate the dynamic relationship between the ways of use the Internet and daily schedules in the contemporary Taiwan. The two sets of data are incomparable. This project does not aim to conduct a comparative research but hope to use proper methods for each era of time. Every time is social. By doing this research, I hope to contribute to better understandings of the contemporary Taiwan, where time is always squeezed, and the colonial Taiwan, while the island transformed from a traditional society into a modernity. Also, time is abstract. I aim to create a doable model to study time and media use. Hopefully this preliminary research could inspire more debates on the subject.
