Social network sites (SNS) had emerged as the fastest growing part of the Internet application. Conventionally, SNS have served as chat room for their members to interact with each other. With the development of Internet technology, the SNS have gradually changed some of their functions and styles. For instance, Plurk, a micro-blogging service, has become popular in Taiwan recently; while Facebook has also become famous in Taiwan due to its plug-in game “Happy Farm”. However, either the ease of use and timely information exchange shown by micro-blogging services or the game-playing features revealed by Facebook cannot fully explanation through previous SNS literature, and has indeed deserved attention from both research and practice communities In this study, we propose a two-year research to investigate why individuals are engaged in these new types of SNS. Deriving from previous research, this study has developed two research models for empirical investigations. The first model will try to explore how individuals’ motivations influence on their self-disclosure, information sharing, and gossip acquiring behavior when using micro-blogging services. Furthermore, we also want to identify the influence of micro-blogging services on individual’s perceived online popularity, website dependency, and subjective well-being. On the other hand, the second model will focus on the influence of motivations on individual’s social interaction and plug-in social game playing behavior in Facebook. The psychological and real life influences of Facebook usage will also been discussed. Based on our two-year works, we expect to provide both academic and practical implications on individuals’ behavior of applying new types SNS, and their impacts on both individuals’ mental feeling and real life.
